Dream destination restaurants

Some restaurant ideas to get your taste buds firing and feet itching for adventurous foodie travel.

1. Venissa, Mazzorbo, Venice

On a little island only reachable by boat from Venice, this Italian restaurant is dazzling and inventive, serving the likes of pasta with eel and deep fried soft shell crabs from the lagoon. It’s surrounded by vineyards and has a few rooms to bunk down in if you stay too late.

2. Three Chimneys, Skye

I remember driving round Skye when I was in my early twenties, wishing I could afford to eat here. Set on a headland miles from anywhere with views of the sea stretching out forever, it’s a real gourmet treat and I hope to go back one day.

3. L’Enclume, Cartmel, Lake District

Ever since we saw Simon Rogan on Great British Menu, Matt and I have been talking about going here. His creative dishes look so delicious that they’d be worth the six-hour drive up from Bristol to Cartmel.

4. Pelican Bar, Jamaica

What, this old rusty thing? I can’t think of anywhere more romantic to spend the afternoon than this little bar, where you can hang out and drink Red Stripe all day, while fresh fish is served up to you. Apparently you can see dolphins on the boat trip on the way out to it.

5. Soneva Kiri, Thailand

This hotel is my absolute dream hotel to visit, partly for its outdoor Cinema Paradiso, and partly for these unique treetop dining pods. They look a bit like oversized picnic baskets and seat two. The waiters have to swing through the trees on ziplines to serve you.

  • I’m a northerner but the Lake District is still a good 4 hour drive for me. It’s one of the few national parks I haven’t managed to visit yet but it’s definitely on the list – it’s easily to see the appeal in Simon Rogan’s cooking style.
