A friend of mine mentioned this intriguing sounding place to me, where the lady makes bread in a wood oven in her garden shed! My mission was to find it, and yesterday was the day that I landed in baking heaven!
The eco bakery is in North Yorkshire, 4 miles north of the seaside town of Scarborough in the village of Burniston. It is very easy to find as they put a ‘Baking Today’ blackboard out on the main road in Burniston. The bakery is only open on a Thursday and Saturday, from 2pm.
You walk down the driveway, past piles of logs for the wood oven, to the bakehouse in the shed. Open the door and the heat and wonderful heady smell of baking hits you - this is quite some shed!

Inside is a fabulous, traditional wood burning bread oven, the shed is like a delightful little country cottage and the tables are lined with baskets containing the mornings baking of breads, muffins, cakes and brownies. The lady baker is most welcoming and encourages you to sample her wares, so with no further ado I happily dived into some green olive & herb bread, with herbs from her garden, next I tried marmalade & apple cake, banana muffins, fresh strawberry & white chocolate muffins, chocolate brownies… yum! yum!

It was all quite delicious. It’s so nice to find someone passionate about what they do and doing it in a sustainable way. I certainly look forward to visiting again sometime and I would recommend it if you find yourself in N. Yorks. You can even have a coffee or tea at the bakehouse.
